I put API 550Bs on the toms, I put an LA2A on the bass, I run distressors and an 1178 on the drums in parallel, and so on. I put 1073s as inserts on the kick, snare and vocals. One studio I work out of a lot has TONS of outboard gear with an HD3 and a Control|24. How protools will add additional delay compensation for the PCM90 on AES 7-8 whenever I insert it on a track or aux. So I go to 15 and 16 on the H/W Insert Delay page and I put in "0.03", which is 20 samples in milliseconds. I always have my PCM90 plugged into AES 7-8 (which I have setup as the 15th and 16th input/output on my 192). So, in the IO setup window the last tab is called "H/W Insert Delay". For example my PCM90 has 20 samples of latency. If you are using an outboard digital device like a reverb, those units have their own latency inside them. Out A5 into the box, from the box back into input A5, and so on. You can't have a piece of hardware getting it's input from, say, A 5, and it's output going to A8. You just have to remember that the inserts work as an IO pair. ![]() Hit play and you have sample accurate parallel compression. So, you would choose "A 3" from the I/O inserts. For this example, let's say your 1176LN is patched into input and output 3 on your aurora. Go to the aux track and click on an insert, but instead of choosing TDM or RTAS, choose the third option, which is "I/O". Put an Aux send on the snare track to bus 1. Create an aux track with it's input set to a bus (bus 1 for this example). You can't just put a send to output A3 and then create an aux with it's input set to A3. The trick with using outboard gear and ADC is YOU HAVE TO USE IT AS AN INSERT. ![]() If the Aurora was designed to have the exact same A/D and D/A latency as a 192 IO, then it should work perfectly. The way it can do this is because it knows what the inherent delays are inside the interfaces. ![]() And it automatically shifts all the tracks accordingly to line up. Protools HD ADC calculates the delay incurred from doing the D/A and A/D when inserting a piece of hardware. Protools HD only guarantees the accuracy of ADC when using their interfaces. BUT!!!! since you are using the Aurora all bets are off. so if, for example, i want to parallel compress a snare track, will the compressed snare track line up perfectly with the original snare track if ADC is on? if there is "sub-sample" latency, is it noticeable? the ultimate bottom line is, with an HD rig, will i ever have to nudge a track to make it line up when mixing with outboard gear? lynx aurora converters are being used, so no additional latency is being added there.
